I believe it is important to contribute to the organizations and communities with which I am affiliated; my service and leadership roles, both at Carleton College and in my professional organizations, have allowed me to learn a lot about these organizations.
I try to remain critically reflective about the nature of the communities in which I am engaged, and how members of the community coming from different backgrounds might experience the community differently. I am committed to making the communities in which I participate more welcoming and inclusive.
Service and leadership at Carleton College
Being at a small liberal arts college, I appreciate the opportunity to get to know and work with faculty and staff colleagues across different departments and offices. Over the years, I’ve served as:
- Director of the Perlman Center for Learning & Teaching (2016-2020), a role that included overseeing new faculty mentoring, the faculty development programming portfolio, and working with offices across campus to identify emerging issues relevant to teaching and learning and developing relevant programming.
- Physics & Astronomy Department Chair (2012-2016), a role focused on making sure that department operations and activities promote positive student, faculty, and staff experiences in the department, as well as serving as a liaison to other departments and offices.
- Coordinator of the Summer Science Fellows Program (2011-2014), a role that involved managing all aspects of this program aimed at broadening participation of historically underrepresented groups in the sciences and math by providing research funding and programming to support student fellows for two years.
Some of the committees and working groups I’ve served on include:
- Community, Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion Leadership Board (2021- present)
- Future Learning Technologies Group (2013-2017)
- Faculty Personnel Committee (2014-2016)
- Science Facilities Planning Group (2014-2016)
- Strategic Planning Working Group — Faculty & Staff Compensation (2011-2012)
- Budget Committee (2010-2012)
Service and leadership in the physics community
I value what the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) and the American Physical Society (APS) do to support physics teaching and research, science literacy, and the professional development of physics educators and researchers, and I have been actively involved with both of these professional organizations.
I was a co-author on the AAPT Recommendations for the Undergraduate Physics Laboratory Curriculum, and I served as a reviewer for the “Introductory Courses for STEM Majors” section of A Guide to Effective Practices for Physics Programs (EP3) and for the APS & AAPT Joint Task Force on Undergraduate Physics Programs report, Phys21: Preparing Physics Students for 21st Century Careers.
Additional AAPT/APS involvement:
- APS Forum on Education Executive Committee (2021-2023)
- AAPT Committee for the American Journal of Physics Five-Year Review (2019-2020)
- AAPT Committee on Laboratories (2013-2016)
- APS Reichert Award for Advanced Lab Instruction Selection Committee (2013-2014)
- Minnesota AAPT Chapter (President: 2016-2018; Vice-President: 2014-2016; Treasurer: 2006-2014)
- AAPT Committee on Graduate Education (2006-2009)
Beyond these two organizations, I am also a consultant for the Sherman Fairchild Foundation, and I have been involved with organizing conferences and editing conference proceedings for the Advanced Lab Physics Association (ALPhA).
